Finding a trustworthy contractor can be difficult at best. Things you’ll need are patience, diligence and determination. Before you even contact a contractor, establish your goal for the work to be done. What you are willing to spend on the job? What exactly will the contractor to be doing? Expectations are crucial, but communication is essential. Make sure you have a complete understanding of what you want, and put this onto paper so that all the contractors biding on the project are bidding on the same details. Talk to family, friends, and neighbors for a good referral to contractors they have used in the past. But don’t stop there. Just because your neighbor had a good experience does not guarantee you will have the same. Look at the contractors past work; talk to their references; investigate the contractor by searching the state web site where complaints are filed. A complaint that was resolved tells you more than no complaint what so ever. Many disgruntled consumers do not file a complaint. A clean record is not necessarily a good record. Years in business and number of completed projects tells more than anything else will.

I recently arrived at an appointment and our client commented that I was “breaking the mold”. He was astonished as I was exactly on time for my appointment to inspect the damage to his home. He must have had a bad experience with the cable guy, an appliance repairman, or some other contractor. I simply thanked him for recognizing my timeliness and we moved forward with the appointment.
